Hollywood’s Museum of Broken Relationships

When love expires the memorabilia lives on. Bed sheets saturated by the smell of lovemaking and tattered love letters bring back unwanted memories.

Sometimes it’s hard to let go of such mementos and even more so if they are in perfectly good condition. Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić were both in this dilemma after ending their four-year romance in 2003. Three years later, the two gave themselves a chance to overcome their heartbreak with an art exhibit in Zagreb, Croatia. The pair of old lovers used the exhibition to showcase tokens of their failed love. They then turned it into a traveling exhibition, collecting items for donations along the way. In 2010, the Museum of Broken Relationships opened in Zagreb, the place where it all begun.

The museum’s concept is to mend broken hearts by allowing contributions to the salon’s collection. According to the museum’s website, the ruins of love also serves to inspire and provide comfort to the visitors.

One visitor, John B. Quinn, was immediately moved by the sense of vulnerability that he felt. “This is about the different ways memories can in a sense inhabit objects,” he told Observor.com. “Part of the take away is that this is a universal experience.”

According to abc7.com, he thought more people should see what he saw in Zagreb. “Specifically people in L.A. should see,” he said.

Wanting others to feel that universality of heartache, Quinn brought a second Museum of Broken Relationships to Hollywood. It opened earlier this month in the heart of Los Angeles. The choice in location is justified on its website, “It will feel right at home in a city that is steeped in such history of wild dreams and crushing defeats.

Admissions to some nostalgia and whimsical melancholy at the LA branch cost $18. Currently, there are over 100 items on display. The totems of love range from silly to heart wrenching. A notable relic is a wedding dress in a jar accompanied with a heartfelt explanation. The museum is also accepting keepsake donations on their website.
