So far the first full week of June 2018 has been filled with multiple movie trailers. The list is nearly endless. There have been teasers and official trailers for upcoming movies: Mortal Engines, Operation Finale and White Boy Rick. The films that have had the best trailers so far in June are The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Widows, Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet, Suspiria and Bumblebee.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
This movie is the sequel to the critically acclaimed and box office hit The Lego Movie. This film won’t have the same directors of the original but voice actors: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett and more will reprise their roles.
This trailer does a fair job at having the same “Everything is Awesome” vibes as the original movie and does an okay job at presenting new elements that may play key roles in the sequel. However, none of this may be that exciting. Hopefully, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will be a respectable sequel to a movie that can easily be considered a modern animation classic. It premieres in February 2019.
Widows
Widows is a heist film that opens November 16, 2018 and out of these five movies has the best overall team. The director of Widows is Steven McQueen, the first Black director to win the Academy Award for Best Picture (the movie was 12 Years A Slave). The writers include McQueen and Gillian Flynn who wrote the book Gone Girl and the screenplay for the movie Gone Girl.
The cast is just as exciting. Based off the trailer, the main star seems to be Viola Davis and she is backed up by Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya and many more.
The official trailer itself is very exciting and reveals the premise of the film to be about these women who seem to team up to steal money to pay off their dead husbands’ debts. The premise is intriguing and this movie will probably be at least good. What’s most likely to get people to buy tickets to this movie though is all the familiar faces they see during this trailer. The trailer for Widows is dramatic and action-packed but doesn’t stand out too much.
Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet
Finally, the official trailer for this movie is here. This trailer has great moments but for an official trailer, it doesn’t reveal really anything about the film’s story besides the two main characters from the original movie are going to the Internet. It’s a clever premise but doesn’t really show this movie will be worth two full hours of your day.
The trailer refers to Google, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and etc. The best references though are to Disney products such as Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and of course the Disney princesses. There is a sneak peak of this awesome, fan-dreamed scene with all the Disney princesses in this trailer. It’s phenomenal but there may also be a part of you that wishes the surprise of this scene wasn’t ruined for you. Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet premieres November 21, 2018.
Suspiria
2018’s Suspiria is a remake to a classic Italian 1977 horror film of the same name. The reboot stars Tilda Swinton, Chloë Grace Moretz, Dakota Johnson, Jessica Harper (who was in the original film) and etc.
The teaser trailer is really eerie and filled with bleak visuals. These images include a blanket bloodied by a dead body and maggots on a face. The title is also ominously spelled out letter by letter during the trailer and there is no dialogue at all. Once the trailer ends, the full title is presented and is spelled unevenly on the screen.
In Latin, suspiria means breathlessness. After watching this trailer, you might feel breathless and either scared or thrilled to see this movie depending on your general feelings about horror films. Suspiria opens on November 2nd (two days after Halloween) and is produced by Amazon Studios.
Bumblebee
Bumblebee has had the best trailer of the week so far and this is very shocking when one considers the decline of the Transformers movie franchise. Though it might also explain why this trailer is the best.
Something that can be better than no expectations at all is low expectations. This trailer is a good teaser but low expectations can help make the good seem great. For Suspiria, you didn’t really have any expectations for it if you didn’t know it was coming out. For Bumblebee, before this trailer, most people probably thought this movie would most likely be horrible. Now this trailer gives hope though.
Bumblebee could be the E.T. of the Transformers movie franchise. The beginning of this trailer when actress Hailee Steinfield’s character meets Bumblebee for the first time is alluring and exciting. It’s also emotional and has innocence. This Bumblebee isn’t even gigantic and is only like twice the size of a human.
This shows a smaller scale for the movie which might mean this will be the most personal live action Transformers movie so far.
The rest of the trailer is subpar but there are glimpses of a Decepticon and John Cena. Bumblebee rolls out into theatres on December 21, 2018. This trailer can give hope to fans that this movie might be the surge of fuel that this franchise needs.
Maybe Bumblebee isn’t the best trailer so far this week. Maybe there is a movie that wasn’t even mentioned in this article that has had a better trailer that premiered in the month of June. Comment down below if you agree or disagree.
