The head of the Afghan High Peace Council for National Reconciliation, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, said that Afghan peace is linked with Pakistan. “However, if violence does not abate, it will impede the Afghan peace process.”

While addressing the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad on Monday, he said, “Both Afghanistan and Pakistan have faced different extremist groups, and both paid a high price for peace.” He said that some elements are still sabotaging peace efforts, adding that “We should jointly cooperate against such elements.”

He further said, “Afghanistan will not allow any extremist organization to cause a threat to any other group or country.”

“The beginning of talk between the Afghan government and Taliban is a great opportunity through which we can make war the part of forgotten history.” He added that Kabul had asked its negotiating team to be patient and cooperative.

Abdullah further said, “Pakistan and Afghanistan are facing similar threats and challenges, including terrorism, extremism, intolerance, and the coronavirus.”

He said that both countries can further increase mutual security, social, and political cooperation.

Pakistani Foreign Minister

On this occasion, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi expressed complete support in the Afghan peace process.

Qureshi said Pakistan respects Afghan sovereignty, liberty, and border integrity. He said, “Pakistan has no ‘favorites’ (group or personalities) in Afghanistan, and that it will never interfere in Afghanistan’s internal matters.”

The Pakistani leader said that his country would accept the Afghan people’s general will as Pakistan believes it is their exclusive right to decide their future. “Nobody can enforce his will on the people.”

The foreign minister also said that the peace dialogue between Kabul and the Taliban is a historic opportunity for peace in Afghanistan. “The Afghan leadership should not let this golden opportunity go.”

The minister also stressed the need for increased cooperation between the two countries for a joint future.

Qureshi said that the decades-long war in Afghanistan proved futile. He said, “after the military solution failed, we are convinced that the only solution to the Afghan crisis is dialogue.”

The minister said, though most people in Afghanistan want peace, there are some subversive elements who thrive on wars. “We need to be aware of these elements that benefit from wars and crisis situations, as their interests could be different from that of the Afghan people.”

Abdullah Abdullah’s Visit to Pakistan: Analysis

With Dr Abdullah Abdullah’s visit to Pakistan, it appears that the Afghan peace initiative in its most crucial phase. Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan had been critical during the last two decades of the US war on the land-locked country. In the post-war scenario, with the Taliban at the helm, Pakistan’s role is likely to become even more critical, given its historical ties with the group.
