According to Research, Naps Help the Elderly Live Better

Scientists have found a simple and rather effective way for the elderly to live longer. They suggest that the elderly take naps during the day for about an hour. As we get older, are cognitive functioning starts to decline, which causes us to forget. By taking an hour long nap during the day, Junxin Li, Ph.D., of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology at Johns Hopkins, believes that napping can improve cognitive performance for older adults, which basically means, it can help improve the memory. Li stumbled upon this research by examining 2,974 Chinese adults aged 65 and older, that were part of a China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

This study consisted of a series of test that dealt with world recall, assessed attention, episodic memory, visuospatial abilities, and mathematical test. Researchers asked test subjects how long they nap after lunch, during the past month. Subjects were put into four categories. For non-nappers, it was 0 minutes. Short nappers slept for less than 30 minutes. Moderate nappers slept for a roughly 30 to 40 minutes and extended nappers slept for more than 90 minutes. They found that the ones who moderately napped, performed a lot better on the tests.

We always hear about older people developing dementia and Alzheimer’s in their later years.  Napping may decrease the chances of that.  The National Sleep Foundation also suggests that a 20 to 30 minute nap will boost alertness and mental performance, without jeopardizing one’s nighttime sleep. Although this research seems to make sense, however Li and researchers state, that this research is still observational. This means that they still have to proof that it will hinder elderly peoples cognitive functioning from decreasing.   Junxin Li believes that their team needs to do more research on this topic in order to prove their theory.
