Activists in Kayaks Protest Shell’s Artic Drilling

Environmentalists in Seattle went to protest Shell’s Arctic drilling, and how did they protest? They took kayaks, paddle boats, canoes, or whatever ship type vehicle they could find. The purpose was to get close to the drilling rig, so the protestors could have their voices heard. They paddled their way out there with posters and they were chanting “Climate Justice,”

“Oil-Free Future,” “Shell No, Seattle Draws The Line,” and “We can’t burn all the oil on the planet and still live on it.”

Annie Leonard, executive director of Greenpeace USA, expressed why Arctic drilling is bad,

“Why would we invest in an energy source that scientists say is leading us to catastrophe?” And Eric Day, of the Swinomish Indian Tribe, said that “This is our livelihood. We need to protect it for the crabbers, for the fishermen. We need to protect it for our children.”

Though there are some who view the drilling differently. A scuba diver from Yakima, Washington said

“It’s a bunch of crap. The problem is, all of these kayaks are petroleum products, and they’re going to gripe about drilling for oil. And 90 percent of them drove here in cars that use petroleum products.”

And Dave Gering of the Manufacturing Industrial Council said

“To ask the port to forgo revenue based on Arctic-sourced fuel when the city of Seattle collects millions of dollars every year based on Arctic sourced fuel — I think that’s a major contradiction.”

The police were present to make sure that the protestors didn’t get too rowdy, and to be sure they keep 100 feet between the protestors and the rig. It is expected that the protests will continue on Monday as well.
