At least six people were killed by a suicide attack at a security checkpoint heading to the foreign ministry in Kabul, Afghanistan, according to police.

“A suicide attacker was identified and killed at a checkpoint in Malik Asghar Square, but his explosives detonated,” said Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran. According to him, three Taliban security personnel were among the injured.

He did not clarify which government facilities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were located along the heavily guarded motorway near the checkpoint.

According to the national director of the adjacent Italian-run emergency hospital, twelve wounded people and two bodies had been brought in.

In recent months, several attacks have targeted Kabul and other urban centers. Islamic State militants have claimed credit for a number of these attacks.

At least five people were killed and several were injured when a device exploded as employees were leaving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in January.

The Taliban administration has launched many operations against Islamic State Fighters. This indicates its commitment to protecting the country.

The incident happened on Monday around noon, when the city is at its busiest. Many government employees leave early during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
