Africa’s week in pictures: 2-8 June 2023

This week’s top photos from Africa and beyond include a rock cutter in Kenya, the Great Mosque of Djenne in Mali, US First Lady Jill Biden visiting the al-Azhar Grand Mosque in Egypt and speaking to students in Morocco, South African singer Lulama Taifasi at a workshop in Cape Town, and various protests in Malaga, Spain and Nairobi, Kenya. The photos also feature people dressed in plastic to mark World Environment Day and a Medieval Festival in Johannesburg. All images are copyrighted.
Only about two years have passed since the coronavirus pandemic took the world by storm, yet Africa has faced an unprecedented demand of a different kind. In the past week (June 2-8, 2023), the continent has seen a surge in political protests, alongside natural disasters such as floods, fires, and crop destruction. Here are some of the defining moments from the week:

Political protests in Nigeria were sparked when security forces killed several peaceful protestors at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos. The act was condemned by international leaders, but not before the wave of demonstrations had spread to major cities across the continent.

In Uganda, a new term of office for President Yoweri Museveni is being contested in what has been called the “Uganda Spring” protests. Tens of thousands have marched in the capital, Kampala, and other major cities to demand reforms to the country’s electoral system and an end to Museveni’s thirty-six-year rule.

Central African Republic is struggling to contain a series of floods that has hit thousands of people, leaving many homeless and severely affected by water-borne diseases. In the city of Bangui, the flooding is said to be the worst in recent memory.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a major fire destroyed the Uvira marketplace and adjacent districts, leaving hundreds of residents with minimal access to food and other basic necessities.

A severe drought in Ethiopia is said to have caused crop destruction, leading to a food shortage and an increasing homeless population.

Finally, Morocco held a weeklong commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of its occupation by Spanish forces. The celebration also marked the beginning of a transitional period that is thought to be a precursor to true political, economic, and social independence for the country.

With varied problems to consider, the African continent is in need of both local and international support. This snapshot of the week highlights the urgent nature of the continent’s needs, and serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity between the nations of Africa and the global community.
