Alcaraz has ‘no doubts’ he will compete in Saudi Arabia one day

On June 26, Carlos Alcaraz, the top-ranked player in the world, expressed his confidence in playing in Saudi Arabia in the future. He believes that the country has the capacity to hold numerous tournaments, following talks between the ATP Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi has discussed potential projects with the PIF, including infrastructure, events, and technology investment. Gaudenzi emphasized that any potential investors must respect the sport’s history and work with current stakeholders. Alcaraz has never played an official tournament in Saudi Arabia but is optimistic about the future. Critics have accused the PIF of “sportswashing” to improve the country’s reputation amid human rights concerns. However, Saudi Arabia denies these accusations and claims to protect its national security through its laws. While Saudi Arabia has not hosted an ATP tournament, it has held the Diriyah Cup exhibition event, which has attracted top players such as Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka. The Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit recently merged with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in soccer, Formula One, and boxing. Jeddah was reportedly among the bidders for the ATP’s Next Gen Finals, which features the top Under-21 players. Shrivathsa Sridhar in Bengaluru reported this news, and Peter Rutherford edited it.
