Analysis: Nigeria’s Tinubu faces daunting hurdles after reform sprint

Nigeria’s new President, Bola Tinubu, has implemented a series of radical changes in his first month in office, including removing petrol subsidies and forex restrictions. While these reforms have impressed investors, some analysts and business leaders question whether Tinubu, viewed by many as part of Nigeria’s old guard, is the right person to tackle the country’s bigger challenges. Nigeria faces record debt, high unemployment, power shortages, shrinking oil output, and rampant insecurity. Corruption and patronage networks also pose significant obstacles to progress. Tinubu’s reforms have been met with resistance, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies, which has led to a nearly tripled petrol price, hitting millions of households and small businesses. Tinubu’s legitimacy is also being challenged in court. To achieve his ambition of building a $1 trillion economy in eight years, Tinubu must address chronic power shortages, insecurity, and corruption. However, his ties to Nigeria’s political, religious, and tribal networks have raised concerns about his ability to tackle these entrenched problems.
