The area in which the ancient city was found was discovered due to a state housing development, which wanted to build upon the seemingly empty land. Mehmet Ergün Turan, the head of the agency stated they are canceling all future plans of development because of the discovery, what many will agree as a very wise decision. After all this is the largest land discovery they have had to date.
Based on a brief sweep within the cave like structure, it appears that the ruins that are standing are remnants of ancient buildings, water channels, and even some hidden churches. This is truly an archaeologist’s dream, exploring a piece of time, spanning back 5,000 years, that was forgotten by the rest of the world. There is so much potential for discovery that these archeologists are going to focus on observing every facet of the civilization, while making sure they preserve the land as it is.
It’s fascinating to hear stories like this because it opens up the ideas that we have not discovered everything on this Earth, and that there may be so much more that we have to learn. The world may seem like a small place sometimes, but it’s truly magnificent that something can be kept and preserved for over 5,000 years.
