André Leon Talley, a fashion icon, has passed away. He was 73 years old at the time.

According to TMZ, the famous writer and former Vogue creative director have been in the hospital suffering an unexplained disease.

The news of Talley’s passing spread fast on social media, with designer Diane von Fürstenberg expressing her grief on Instagram.

“Good bye darling André ❤️🙏… No one saw the world in a more glamorous way than you did ❤️🙏… no one was grander and more soulful than you were ❤️🙏…the world will be less joyfulI ❤️🙏 I have loved you and laughed with you for 45 years…. I miss your loud screams …I love you soooo much ❤️🙏.”

Talley’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

André Leon Talley began her career at Vogue in 1983 as the fashion news director. He soon progressed through the ranks to become Anna Wintour’s right-hand man as creative director and editor-in-chief, a position he held from 1987 until 1995. In 1995, he left Vogue and relocated to Paris, where he returned to W Magazine, where he had previously worked.

He continued to work as an editor at Vogue until 1998 when he returned full-time as editor-at-large and began authoring the monthly piece Style Fax. He lasted in this job until 2013 when he left Vogue for good.

Talley has also contributed to Women’s Wear Daily, The New York Times, and Interview Magazine during his career. André is also the subject of The Gospel According to André, a documentary that was released in 2018.

In May 2020, he published The Chiffon Trenches, a book about his life and career that traces his unlikely journey from the front porch of his grandmother’s house in Durham, North Carolina, to the front rows of fashion.

Among the many details revealed in the book, Talley discussed the end of his time at Vogue and how his 30-year friendship with Wintour deteriorated.

“I think my relationship with her is an iceberg,” Talley stated in a 2020 interview with Gayle King. “I hope it isn’t like this forever.”

Jason Sheeler, PEOPLE’s Deputy West Coast Editor, recently chatted with Talley.

“I reached out to him last week about a story I’m working on. I wrote and contacted him for a few days in classic ALT fashion, and then received an all-caps text CALL ME NOW, CALL ME NOW, CALL ME NOW, CALL ME NOW, CALL ME NOW, CALL ME NOW, CALL ME NOW, CALL ME NOW, C “Sheeler, who has interviewed Talley numerous times throughout his career, recalled the encounter.

“You had to be prepared for André’s response when you asked him a question. He was always prepared to respond. He saw fashion in a way that many others didn’t, from runway to fine art to fame to models to photography to pop culture, and he connected dots that many others couldn’t see “Sheeler continues. “Our interview last week turned into a fashion history lesson, as it frequently does. He discussed one of the most famous fashion quotes of all time, Linda Evangelista’s groundbreaking ‘We don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day’ statement to Vogue in 1990. André, of course, had a way to put everything in context.”

“Today, for appropriate equity, you know, it would be quite relevant for a woman to say that,’ he said. It would not be deemed snobbish or elitist in any way. It would be seen as a valuable person standing up for her rights.”
