There is An App for that: Anxiety

Feeling anxious and nervous is something that happens to a lot of people. Sometimes it feels like you are just overwhelmed and cannot catch your breath. Explaining how you’re feeling to those who have no idea how it feels is difficult and can frustrate you even more. However, besides having either a nice close group of friends and maybe a therapist, there is another way to handle your anxiety from day to day. There is an app called Pacifica that helps you get through your day if you have anxiety.

The interface of the app in the first place is very calming. It’s an animation of waves coming in onto shore, and the colors are a light blue and a light green. This already gives you a sense of calm before going deeper into the app. To start, you explain what type of anxiety you normally get, like social anxiety. Then, when you get to the home screen of the app, you can log in how you are feeling that day. It can be either good or bad, so if your anxiety isn’t that bad one day you log it saying you were feeling great or even just ok.

The next feature of the app is relaxation. This feature helps you do just that: relax. It teaches you the proper way to breath so you don’t start to hyperventilate when you are having an anxiety attack, and it also plays calm noises to help as well. It also helps you meditate in general, which is always helpful when you have anxiety.

Another feature is that you get to record your thoughts. You speak into your phone and explain how you were feeling and perhaps try to figure out why. You’re essentially just getting everything off your chest. Then you listen back to what you said and you pinpoint a positive and a negative thought. Then you try to figure out what was the real reason behind your anxiety.

The last two features on the app are experiments and health. In experiments, it pretty much gives you situations where you would feel anxious and tries to help you do those things. If it is too much, just do baby steps, since anxiety attacks are no fun. The last feature is health, where you just track diet, exercise, and how much sleep you got the night before. Physical wellness goes hand in hand with mental wellness, so going for a walk or even a run can lift your mood.

The only thing about this app that isn’t so great is that you don’t have access to all the features without paying something. Still, the app helps a lot for those with anxiety from day to day. Still, if your anxiety is really bad, please seek out a professional who can console you through it.
