Argentina, South Africa hopes dented by thrilling draw

Argentina and South Africa played to a thrilling 2-2 draw in their Women’s World Cup Group G match at Dunedin Stadium on July 28. The result kept both teams in contention but dealt a blow to their hopes of advancing. South Africa took a 2-0 lead with goals from Linda Motlhalo and Thembi Kgatlana. Motlhalo’s goal came after Kgatlana passed the ball to her, catching the Argentinian defenders off guard. Argentina struggled to threaten the South African goal until the second half when Sophia Braun scored a stunning long-range strike and Romina Nunez’s header leveled the scores. The draw leaves both teams with a single point and slim chances of progressing from a group that includes Sweden and Italy. South Africa coach Desiree Ellis expressed frustration at the missed chances, while Argentina midfielder Braun praised her team’s resilience and looked forward to the upcoming match against Sweden.
