Aroldis Chapman Reportedly Dealt to Cubs

There has been much speculation as to where Aroldis Chapman would end up when all was said and done. Trade rumors have been swirling around him and the New York Yankees in the past week as the Yankees are on the hinge of a complete rebuild. But now, it seems the rumors of Chapman will be finally put to rest.

It was first reported Sunday evening that the Chicago Cubs were the frontrunners in the Chapman sweepstakes. They sit as one of the top teams in the National League and are the favorites to win the World Series for the first time in 108 years. Their weakness, however, is the bullpen, and in recent weeks they have made moves to turn it into a strength. Chapman may be that final piece for them to win it all.

In 31.1 innings pitched this year, Chapman has an earned run average just over 2.00. He has struck out 44 and has converted 20 out of 21 save opportunities. His ability to throw as high as 105 mph makes him a fan favorite, as well as one of the hardest pitchers to face in the league.

The asking price for him by the Yankees was steep. Originally, they wanted prized but injured Cubs hitter Kyle Schwarber in the deal, but after that was denied, they settled for something else. In return for Chapman the Yankees will receive 4 players: former Yankee Adam Warren, and three prospects. The centerpiece of the deal is Gleyber Torres, a middle infielder who was ranked as being the Cubs’ top prospect. The Yankees will also receive their 5th best prospect, outfielder Billy McKinney.

This move should be a win-win for both teams. The Yankees get noticeably younger in their organization, as well as deepening their prospect pool. The Cubs get a proven relief pitcher who could conceivably record the final out that ends a century-long curse that has plagued the Cubs.

While the deal has yet to be officially finalized, it is expected to come Monday’s conclusion.

About Alec Montecalvo

Just an aspiring writer trying to make his mark on the world. Ask me and I'll explain to you why an All-Pitcher's Home Run Derby is a good idea, and how hockey is perhaps the greatest North American sport we have. That's all I got for now. I should get back to writing.

Have a tip we should know?
