According to official data released on Wednesday, the number of tourists visiting Japan reached a post-pandemic high of nearly 2 million in April as a result of loosening restrictions in China.

The number of international visitors to Japan for both business and pleasure increased to 1.95 million in April, up from 1.82 million in March, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)

Arrivals were down 33% from April 2019 even after pandemic travel restrictions were implemented the following year.

Because of the impact of the pandemic on China’s tourism industry, the country relaxed outbound travel restrictions last month.

A record number of Chinese tourists visited Japan in 2019, accounting for one-third of all visitors.

However, due to the ongoing flight shortage, returning to normalcy may take some time.

Asami Chung, general manager of travel management firm FCM Japan, predicted that “we foresee a continuous increase in the number of international flights from China” as a result of the 11% increase in capacity between March and April 2023.

According to JNTO statistics, 108,300 Chinese visitors arrived in April, a 43% increase over March but still well below 2019 levels.

Since the country reinstated visa-free travel for many countries in October, the number of visitors has steadily increased.

As of April 5, infected Chinese tourists were no longer required to undergo pre-arrival COVID tests, and all remaining infection controls were discarded as of May 8.

Tourism to Japan gradually resumed in June 2022, after being virtually halted for over two years due to the pandemic.

Traveling to Japan is now more affordable than it has been in a long time, thanks to a sharp drop in the value of the yen against the euro and the dollar.
