At least 300 migrants missing at sea near Spanish Canary Islands, aid group says

At least 300 people who were travelling on three migrant boats from Senegal to Spain’s Canary Islands have disappeared, according to migrant aid group Walking Borders. Helena Maleno of Walking Borders informed RushHourDaily that two boats, one carrying about 65 people and the other with between 50 and 60 on board, have been missing for 15 days since they left Senegal in an attempt to reach Spain. Another boat, carrying approximately 200 people, left Senegal on June 27. The families of those on board have not had any contact with them since they departed, as stated by Maleno. All three boats departed from Kafountine in the south of Senegal, which is approximately 1,700 kilometers (1,057 miles) away from Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. Maleno expressed concern for the families, explaining that the individuals are from the same area of Senegal and left due to the instability in the country.

The Canary Islands have become the primary destination for migrants attempting to reach Spain, with a smaller number also aiming to cross the Mediterranean Sea to the Spanish mainland. The summer season sees the highest volume of attempted crossings. The Atlantic migration route, known as one of the deadliest in the world, is predominantly used by migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Data from the U.N.’s International Organisation for Migration reveals that in 2022 alone, at least 559 people, including 22 children, lost their lives while attempting to reach the Canary Islands.
