Australia, NZ cleared to fly Indigenous flags at Women’s World Cup

FIFA has agreed to the request from Australia and New Zealand to display Indigenous flags at the Women’s World Cup, according to the co-hosts. The Australian Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag will be shown at all 35 matches in Australia, while the Māori flag, known as ‘Tino Rangatiratanga’, will be displayed at all 29 matches in New Zealand. Football Australia boss James Johnson stated that this confirmation by FIFA is an important moment for all Australians, especially First Nations People. The Australian World Cup team includes Indigenous Australian players Kyah Simon and goalkeeper Lydia Williams. Simon expressed her pride in her culture and First Nations people, mentioning that her family always brings their own Aboriginal flag to major tournaments. She hopes that people from abroad can witness the rich culture of Australia and gain knowledge along the way. The World Cup is set to begin on July 20.
