Australian court fines Dell unit $6.5 mln for misleading customers on discounts

Dell Technologies Inc’s local unit in Australia has been ordered by the Federal Court to pay A$10 million ($6.46 million) in penalties for misleading representations on its website regarding discounts for add-on computer monitors. The court found Dell Australia guilty of misleading customers about prices or discounts on add-on monitors. Liza Carver, commissioner of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, stated that this outcome sends a strong message to businesses that false representations about prices or inflated discounts are serious breaches of consumer law and will result in substantial penalties. Dell Australia, which sold over 5,300 add-on monitors with overstated discounts between August 2019 and December 16, 2021, has committed to providing appropriate refunds plus interest to affected customers and is taking measures to improve pricing processes to prevent similar errors in the future. The exchange rate is $1 = 1.5480 Australian dollars. The article was reported by Navya Mittal in Bengaluru and edited by Rashmi Aich and Subhranshu Sahu.
