Australia’s Albanese retraces historic Beijing walk on visit to mend ties

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the Temple of Heaven in Beijing on November 6, 2023, following in the footsteps of the first Australian leader to visit China. This visit comes as Albanese aims to mend relations between the two trading partners, which have been strained in recent years due to various issues. Despite tensions, Albanese hopes to strengthen ties with China and met with President Xi Jinping during his visit. At the Temple of Heaven, Albanese posed for a photograph at the same spot where Australia’s former prime minister, Gough Whitlam, stood in 1973. Albanese emphasized the importance of engagement between the two countries. China and Australia have historically had a strong trade relationship, with China being Australia’s largest trading partner. However, tensions arose after Australia accused China of meddling in its politics and banned equipment from Chinese tech giant Huawei. The relationship further deteriorated when Australia called for an international inquiry into the origin of COVID-19, leading to Chinese blocks on Australian imports. Despite these challenges, Albanese has taken steps to stabilize relations and has seen positive signs, such as China lowering trade barriers and reviewing tariffs on Australian products. However, obstacles remain, including China’s projection of power in the Pacific and Australia’s support for a U.N. ruling rejecting China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. Albanese emphasizes the need for cooperation with China while also protecting Australia’s national interests.
