The queen has ended a two-week period of royal mourning on Friday.

The virtual meetings were the first to be made public since Philip’s funeral on April 17 at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. Strict social distancing laws required the queen to remain alone at the ceremony, a scene that moved many people who had already lost loved ones in the pandemic.

A week before the funeral, Elizabeth II visited the retirement of her Lord Chamberlain, who organizes all official affairs for the palace, and welcomed his successor.

The queen also celebrated her birthday last week, using the opportunity to thank everyone who paid tribute to her 73-year-old husband, Philip.

The royal family was in a “period of great sadness,” but words of respect and admiration for the duke brought them consolation, she said.
