The New York City Ballet will be working with top designers Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, Carolina Herrera, Valentino, Mary Katrantzou, and Thom Browne to create costumes this season. The perfect group that can easily integrate theater into fashion.
The costumes will debut at the NYCB’s opening gala on September 23rd and each designer have been paired up with a choreographer: Liam Scarlett will work with Sarah Burton, Tiler Peck will work with Katrantzou, Troy Schumacher with Browne, and Peter Martins with Carolina Herrera. Valentino Garavani will design the costumes for a pre-existing piece from Christopher Wheeldon.
The NYCB has a reputation for working with high fashion designers for a few years now, first working with Rodarte in 2012, followed by Prabal Gurung, Iris van Herpen, and Olivier Theyskens in 2013. But this by far is the most high profile group.
