Professional barbecue competitor, Jeff Petkevicius, found himself quiet upset after officials at the Alabama barbecue competition, ordered all contestants displaying an American flag to remove them from their trailers.
“The sport of professional barbecue is extremely American and family oriented,” exclaims Petkevicius who believes barbecuing is almost as American as the flag itself.
Petkevicius, founder of the “Give it to God” competition barbecue team, along with several others, were waving the flag for a brief period of time at the Sam’s Club National BBQ Competition in Daphne, Alabama.
“There were six or eight of us that had flags flying,” stated Petkevicius according to Fox News, “He went to each camp and told them to take the flag down and everybody did.”
Petkevicius became very angry after he was asked to remove the flag from his trailer, going on to say, “The whole time I’m thinking –the reason I fly the flag is because I love America. I love what it stands for. It’s a way to say to our current and former troops, thank you.”
In an act of defiance and patriotism, Petkevicius raised his flag for all to see, and exclaimed that they could kick the barbecue competitor out if they wanted to.
It turns out that he was not removed from the competition even though a rumored state ordinance was said to make the flags banned. A policy that was in fact not true.
Mayor, Dane Haygood told Petkevicius, “No one from the city advised or asked anyone to take down flags of any type. We proudly and boldly display American flags and we encourage everyone in the community to do the same.”
It was later discovered that Mike McCloud, the Tour Director of the Kansas City Barbecue Society, was responsible for the flag incident, and stated, “As a measure of precaution, we asked everyone to take down any kind of signs or any kind of flags that were being displayed. It turned out that some of those happened to be American flags.” Essentially, he exclaimed that it was not directed solely towards those with the American flag.
