Belgium qualifier v Sweden suspended after two Swedes shot dead in Brussels – UEFA

The Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden was suspended and later abandoned due to a fatal shooting in Brussels. UEFA made the decision after consulting with the teams and local police authorities. Belgium had raised its terror alert to the highest level following a video on social media claiming responsibility for the attack in the name of the Islamic State. Swedish reporters were informed of the attack just before the national anthems were played, and Sweden’s players expressed their unwillingness to continue the match. The score was tied at 1-1 when the suspension was announced, and Swedish fans were asked to remain in the stadium while arrangements were made for their safe escort. The victims were reported to be wearing Sweden shirts at the time of the shooting. Belgium had already secured a place in the Euro 2024 finals, while Sweden’s hopes were dashed by Austria’s draw with Azerbaijan earlier in the day.
