According to Serbian authorities, a 14-year-old pupil opened fire in his Belgrade classroom on Wednesday morning, killing eight students and a security officer and injuring seven others.

Armed with his father’s revolver, the young man allegedly opened fire on a security officer and three female students in the hallway before bursting into a history lecture and opening fire on the instructor and students inside. The instructor and six students were taken to the hospital with significant injuries.

Police say they apprehended a seventh-grader in the playground after he admitted to the shooting and made a 911 call. His motivations were investigated.

According to Veselin Milic, superintendent of police in Belgrade, the assailant was armed with two firearms and two fuel explosives. “He even had the names and classes of the children he intended to murder,” he said during a news briefing.

In helmets and protective vests, police officers surrounded the school and blocked off the surrounding area. The deceased were transferred to hearses.

Evgenija, age 14, asserted that she knew the assailant.

He was mystifyingly reticent, yet affable and brilliant. Did not know him well; he was not particularly outgoing. She reportedly told RushHourDaily, “I never imagined this could occur.”

She asserted, “I heard noises and I thought some boys, some kids were throwing firecrackers for fun, but then I heard that even closer and… then I saw the security guard falling to the ground,” before claiming she fled.

According to the interior ministry, eight children and a security officer were killed, and six children and their teacher were taken to the hospital. The minister of the interior, Bratislav Gasic, verified that the shooter’s father had also been arrested.
