Officials and police in the Nigerian state of Benue revealed this week that at least 74 people were murdered in two separate terrorist assaults. These were the most recent clashes in an area where violence between pastoralists and farmers is common.

More land must be allocated to agriculture as the population grows, leaving less area for open grazing for nomads’ cattle herds. This has resulted in a rise in violence in recent years.

According to Catherine Anene, a Benue state police spokeswoman, 28 corpses were recovered overnight between Friday and Saturday at an IDP camp in the Mgban local government.

The cause of the event is unknown, but witnesses claim intruders approached and opened fire, killing a number of individuals.

Bako Eje, chairman of Otukpo local government area, said that suspected herdsmen slaughtered villagers at a funeral in the remote Umogidi village of Otukpo local government area on Wednesday.

According to Paul Hemba, the governor of Benue state’s security adviser, 46 dead were recovered during Wednesday’s assault.

President Muhammadu Buhari decried “the latest wave of killings in Benue State in which scores of people were slain in Umogidi town” in a statement made on Saturday, and ordered the deployment of extra security patrols in the area.

Nigeria’s security forces are periodically late at rural assault sites due to overburdening and lack of resources.

Benue is a state in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where the country’s Muslim North and Christian South meet.

Land use rivalry is especially vexing in the Middle Belt, where ethnic and religious divides commonly overlap with fault lines between farmers and herders.

Residents of Zamfara state, a hub for kidnappings for ransom by armed gangs targeting isolated locations, said on Saturday that at least 80 people had been seized by gunmen.
