Beriso leads Ethiopian 1-2 in women’s marathon

Amane Beriso won the women’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, overcoming hot conditions to finish ahead of defending champion Gotytom Gebreslase. Beriso, who ran the third-fastest marathon ever in Valencia last December, pulled away from the pack in the final lap and finished with a time of 2:24.23. Gebreslase took silver with a time of 2:24.34, while Fatima Gardadi won bronze, securing Morocco’s first-ever medal in the event. The race started at 7 a.m. local time, but the athletes still had to contend with the heat. A group of six initially broke away, but the four Ethiopians worked together to make their move in the last lap. Beriso then extended her lead and split the group, leaving Yehualaw in second place and Gebreslase in third. Despite their efforts, neither of them could catch up to Beriso, who claimed an impressive victory. Lonah Chemptai Salpeter of Israel finished fourth, and Yehualaw finished fifth. Beriso’s win caps off an incredible nine months for her, as she set a personal best and finished second in the Boston Marathon earlier this year. Beriso credited the teamwork of the Ethiopian athletes for their success in the race. The men’s marathon is scheduled for the following day, and the mass participation 10km race has been shortened to 5km due to the forecasted hot weather.
