President Joe Biden said on Tuesday described the conviction in the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin charged with the murder of George Floyd as “a big step” towards justice in the United States. Derek Chauvin, a white officer, was convicted after kneeling in the United States for more than nine minutes on Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, during an arrest last May.

The video of the incident sparked protests against police brutality and racial injustice around the world. The 12-member jury found the 45-year-old Chauvin guilty on the charges – second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter – after three weeks of testimony from as many as 45 witnesses.

“It was murder in broad daylight, and it blew everyone’s blinders off,” Biden said in nationwide televised statements. “Systemic racism is a stain on the nation’s soul,” he added. The Democratic President said the protests in the United States after Floyd’s assassination were something the nation had not seen since the civil rights movement and brought people of different races “together.”

“Nothing can bring your brother and father back,” he said of the Floyd family, “but this can be a huge step forward on the road to justice in America.” Biden also praised the “brave young woman” who recorded Chauvin’s kneeling on Floyd’s neck.

Biden said that for many, “it feels like it took all of that for the judicial system to deliver basic accountability.” Vice President Kamala Harris also commented, calling on the US Senate to pass the George Floyd Police Justice Act, passed by the US House of Representatives, which aims to stop aggressive law enforcement tactics targeting African Americans and other minorities.

That ruling brings us one step closer, “said Harris, the first black, first Asian-American, and first woman to become vice president. That day, Biden said he was praying for the “right judgment,” a comment that drew criticism.

He said he would not have made such a comment if the jury had not been kidnapped. Biden and Harris watched the verdict with staff in the President’s dining room. Biden spoke to Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, and then Biden, Harris, and First Lady Jill Biden spoke to Floyd’s younger brother Philonise Floyd of the Oval Office.
