Biden nominates Admiral Lisa Franchetti to be first woman to lead US Navy

President Joe Biden has nominated Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the Navy, making her the first woman to command the service and become a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This decision by Biden comes as a surprise, as Admiral Samuel Paparo was widely expected to be nominated. However, Franchetti, who currently serves as the vice chief of operations for the Navy, was considered a strong candidate due to her extensive experience, including as commander of U.S. Naval Forces Korea. Biden highlighted Franchetti’s 38 years of experience and noted that she is the second woman to achieve the rank of four-star admiral in the U.S. Navy. This nomination follows Biden’s previous appointment of Admiral Linda Fagan as the first female commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard. Franchetti’s nomination would make her the first woman to lead a military service within the Defense Department and join the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In addition to Franchetti’s nomination, Biden also elevated Paparo to become the commander of all U.S. military forces in the Pacific and selected Vice Admiral Stephen “Web” Koehler to succeed Paparo as commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet. However, Biden’s announcement comes at a time when Senator Tommy Tuberville has placed a block on all U.S. military nominations in Congress, protesting a Defense Department policy regarding abortion. This block could have significant consequences for the armed forces, affecting troops and their families and potentially causing a loss of military talent. The Marine Corps is already facing leadership challenges, as the commandant of the Marine Corps recently stepped down and the hold on promotions has left the Marine Corps without a confirmed leader for the first time in over a century. Biden expressed concern that this delay undermines national security and criticized Senator Tuberville’s actions as dangerous.
