Biden tries to flip skeptical Americans on his economic plan

U.S. President Joe Biden plans to deliver a major speech on Wednesday in an effort to improve Americans’ pessimistic view of the economy. This is a crucial step for Biden as he seeks re-election, as his public approval ratings have declined due to concerns about inflation and the impact of rising interest rates on the economy. Despite overseeing a strong recovery from the COVID-19 recession, Biden’s approval rating has dropped to 41%, with only 35% of respondents approving of his handling of the economy. The speech will take place in Chicago and will focus on Biden’s vision of middle-class American prosperity, which includes taxing the wealthy to invest in critical areas such as semiconductors, worker education, and economic competition. The economy is a top concern for voters, with more than half of Americans disapproving of Biden’s job performance. Although the economy grew at a 1.3% annualized rate in the first quarter and unemployment was at 3.7% in May, inflation rose at a 4% year-over-year rate. However, White House aides believe that inflation is heading in the right direction under Biden’s policies. Federal Reserve officials have acknowledged that they still have a long way to go to bring inflation back down to healthy levels and may need to raise borrowing costs further, which could potentially lead to a recession. Biden’s approach to the economy, which aides refer to as “Bidenomics,” is seen as a contrast to the tax-cutting ethos of Reaganomics. The goal is to grow the economy from the middle out and the bottom up. However, it remains uncertain whether Biden’s message will resonate with the public. The speech comes at a time when voters are still more than a year away from heading to the polls and Republicans are considering a large field of potential candidates, including former President Donald Trump. Biden’s previous major address, an Oval Office speech on a bipartisan deal to end the debt limit crisis, had a limited audience and coverage. Trump has been targeting Biden on the issue of inflation in the early stages of the race. Despite these challenges, Biden is expected to attend a fundraising event in Chicago and is not anticipated to face significant opposition for his party’s nomination.
