Biden using CPAP machine for sleep apnea, officials say

U.S. President Joe Biden has started using a continuous positive airway pressure machine, known as a CPAP, to address his sleep apnea, according to White House officials. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates confirmed that Biden used the CPAP machine last night, which is a common treatment for individuals with a history of sleep apnea. In recent weeks, Biden began using the CPAP machine to improve the quality of his sleep. However, the White House did not provide any additional details regarding the specific complaints or diagnosis that led to the use of the machine, previous treatments for sleep apnea, or whether the president had undergone a sleep study.

The use of the CPAP machine was not previously disclosed and was not mentioned in a February summary of the president’s health status, which focused on conditions that were currently being treated. While the White House claims transparency regarding the president’s health, they did not explain why the use of the machine was not disclosed earlier. In a 2019 report released by Biden’s presidential campaign team, his doctor, Kevin O’Connor, mentioned that he had explored the possibility of Biden having sleep apnea, but his symptoms improved after nasal passage and sinus surgeries.

Sleep apnea is a common disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. If left untreated, it can lead to forgetfulness, fatigue, sleepiness, and even cardiovascular disease due to the strain it puts on the heart. On Wednesday, reporters noticed marks on Biden’s face, indicating that he had been wearing a wide strap, which is often used to secure a CPAP mask. Bloomberg News was the first to report on Biden’s use of the machine.

At 80 years old, Biden is the oldest person to serve as U.S. president, and his age and health have been subjects of concern among voters as he seeks a second term in the 2024 election. Age is one of the factors that increase the risk of developing sleep apnea, and public opinion polls show that a majority of Americans have concerns about Biden’s age. However, in February, his doctor declared him healthy and “fit for duty” after a physical examination. The doctor’s report mentioned that Biden has experienced sinus congestion throughout his life, but his symptoms have improved following sinus and nasal passage surgeries.

In 2008, Politico reported on a medical history document released when Biden was Barack Obama’s vice presidential running mate, which mentioned his “reoccurring problem of sleep apnea.” The article concluded by acknowledging the reporting team and the standards of Thomson RushHourDaily.
