Bigger, heavier, faster: China rolls out military upgrades

China’s military modernization efforts are yielding results, as upgrades for its warships and warplanes are underway amid escalating tensions in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the Taiwan Strait.

At a helicopter expo in Tianjin, China showcased a 1,100-kilowatt turboshaft helicopter engine. According to a Chinese military expert, this high-powered engine is crucial for the development of medium- and heavyweight helicopters.

However, China still lags behind in the development of large helicopters, which have greater carrying capacity and can play a vital role in conflict scenarios.

China recently launched a bigger and more advanced version of its largest frigate, the Type 054B. Experts believe that this new frigate could be equipped with an integrated electric propulsion (IEP) system, an advanced radar, and a combined diesel and gas power system that enhances its stealth capabilities. The new frigate is also larger and equipped with a more powerful main gun, making it better suited for anti-submarine tasks and potential aircraft carrier escort duties.

China has been conducting small-scale flight tests for its J-20 stealth fighter with new WS-15 engines. These engines are expected to provide the J-20 with increased thrust, higher speed, supersonic flight capability without using afterburners, and an extended range. This development could potentially put U.S. bases in South Korea, Japan, and Guam within the J-20’s range.

China is in the final stages of preparing its first domestically made aircraft carrier, the Fujian, for sea trials. Recent images show that construction sheds above the electromagnetic catapult aircraft launch system have been removed, indicating that the carrier will likely join the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) within the next two years. The PLAN’s carrier operations are closely monitored by regional militaries, with some noting that China still has room for improvement in mastering complex operations far from shore.

There have been observations and reports suggesting possible upgrades to China’s 075 type amphibious assault ship, which is considered critical for a potential attack on Taiwan. The upgrade may include integrated electric propulsion, similar to that of the Fujian, which would enhance its air assault capabilities.

In conclusion, China’s military modernization efforts are evident in the upgrades to its warships and warplanes. These developments have implications for regional security in the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the Taiwan Strait.
