For the past several months, Bill Cosby has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. Cosby has been accused by more than 20 women of drugging and raping them. All the women who have come forward have very similar stories that happened to them when they were attacked by Cosby. There was usually alcohol, drugs, and sex involved and usually in that order. Since all the claims are consistent, it brings more legitimacy to the accusations. Along with these accusations, three of the women have filed defamation lawsuits against him. Cosby’s lawyers have been working to get those lawsuits dismissed. The mass volume of the accusations against Cosby are overwhelming.
Throughout all of this, Cosby has remained silent about the whole situation. He has had his representatives deny all of these accusations, but Cosby himself has remained tight lipped. On March 9, 2015 Cosby broke his silence, but not in the way you would imagine. Cosby released a ten second video about how he will continue doing his comedy shows. The video shows Cosby in what seems like red pajamas talking on a telephone. He is saying how he will still be performing and then some text shows up saying, “Dear fans: I hope you enjoy my wonderful video message that’s filled with laughter. Hey, hey, hey — I’m far from finished.” The video is more strange than joyful. Cosby looks like a delusional old man talking on the phone in his pajamas and the overall video is just awkward.
But Cosby still has not said anything about the rape accusations. He wants everyone to know that he intends to continue his comedic career, even with 20 plus women claiming he has drugged and raped them. Does Cosby feel as though not saying anything about the allegations will make them go away? The story broke this past fall when it was still less than 20 women accusing the comedian of drugging and raping them. If Cosby thought this would have gone away that would have been the time. The opposite has happened for Cosby and more women have come forward against him.
Cosby’s silence makes it seem as though he thinks he might be untouchable. A lot of the accusations happened years ago, and the statute of limitations would be expired. So, the women do not have anything to really gain by coming forward except for sharing their stories. Also, remaining silent about the accusations makes Cosby seem like he just doesn’t care. He hasn’t expressed any outrage or embarrassment about the accusations. Just silence.
The only thing that seems to really matter to Cosby is that his career will still be going strong. That, however, is questionable since he has been receiving back lash from other comedians. Hannibal Buress has spoken out against Cosby for his rape accusations long before this blew up in Cosby’s face.
