Blaze aboard ship docked at New Jersey port kills two firefighters

Two New Jersey firefighters were killed and five injured while battling a blaze on a cargo ship at Port Newark, officials said on Thursday. The Italian-flagged Grande Costa d’Avorio was carrying 1,200 vehicles when the fire broke out on its 10th deck. The blaze quickly spread to the 11th and 12th levels as members of the Newark Fire Department responded. Firefighters were pushed back by the intense heat, resulting in the loss of two firefighters. The firefighters killed in the blaze were identified as Wayne Brooks Jr., 49, and Augusto Acabou, 45. Five other firefighters suffered injuries and were taken to a hospital. Chief Rufus Jackson described the fire as uncommon for Newark and praised the bravery of the firefighters. A firefighting vessel was seen dousing the cargo ship with water as smoke rose from the torched vehicles. Port Newark, one of the largest U.S. ports, is under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and there were no reports of a fuel spill or compromised ship stability. The ship was carrying cars, vans, and shipping containers, with no electric cars or hazardous cargo aboard.
