Blue Jays rally, go on to edge Red Sox in 13th

The Toronto Blue Jays emerged victorious over the Boston Red Sox with a 4-3 win in the 13th inning. Whit Merrifield’s infield single secured the walk-off victory for the Blue Jays, scoring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from third base against pitcher Mauricio Llovera. The Red Sox had previously taken the lead in the 12th inning with an RBI single by Pablo Reyes, but Bo Bichette’s sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning tied the game. Chad Green of the Blue Jays earned the win, only allowing an intentional walk in the top of the 13th. Daulton Varsho’s two-out RBI triple in the ninth inning tied the game for the Blue Jays, aided by a misplay from Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela. With this win, the Blue Jays have now won the first two games of the three-game series, while the Red Sox have lost three consecutive games overall. Rafael Devers hit a two-run home run for the Red Sox, while Guerrero contributed a solo shot for the Blue Jays. Chris Bassitt pitched seven strong innings for the Blue Jays, allowing two runs, four hits, and three walks with five strikeouts. On the other hand, Chris Sale of the Red Sox allowed one run, two hits, and two walks in six-plus innings, striking out 10 batters. Devers hit his 32nd home run of the season after Wilyer Abreu’s walk and stolen base in the sixth inning. Guerrero continued his impressive performance with his 24th home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Winckowski replaced Sale after Guerrero’s home run but struggled with control, walking three batters to load the bases before Brennan Bernardino came in to retire pinch hitter Ernie Clement. In the ninth inning, John Schreiber of the Red Sox allowed a single to pinch hitter Cavan Biggio, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Varsho then delivered the game-tying triple to center field. Plate umpire Jordan Baker had to leave the game after being hit by two foul balls.
