Bolsonaro eyes 2026 candidacy for his wife as his political future evaporates

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s hopes of reclaiming the presidency in 2026 may be over, but there could still be a Bolsonaro running in three years’ time. The federal electoral court (TSE) froze Bolsonaro’s political career, preventing him from holding public office until 2030 due to his baseless claims about the country’s voting system. This ruling is a significant blow to the 68-year-old politician who was once Brazil’s most powerful man. However, it does not necessarily mark the end for the Bolsonaro family.

Despite facing criminal probes that could lead to imprisonment, Bolsonaro is still influential in Brazilian politics. He has expressed support for his wife Michelle’s candidacy in 2026. Michelle, in an Instagram post following the TSE ruling, expressed her determination to pursue their shared dream. Bolsonaro’s loss in the previous election to leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sparked a nationwide election denial movement, for which he is widely blamed.

While Bolsonaro has hinted at becoming a political king-maker once he is “out of the game,” many of his former allies are already looking to newer faces for the 2026 elections. Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio Freitas and Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema are among those being considered. However, Bolsonaro’s best chance at remaining relevant may lie with his family.

Michelle Bolsonaro, despite being a political newcomer, has gained popularity among Brazilian working-class women due to her folksy demeanor and emphasis on traditional values. Her visibility increased during the 2022 campaign as Bolsonaro struggled to appeal to female voters. Michelle joined his conservative Liberal Party and now leads its women’s movement. She has not ruled out the possibility of running for office, stating that if her heart desires it, she could become a legislative candidate.

Michelle, like approximately one-third of Brazil’s population, is an Evangelical Christian. Evangelicals strongly supported Bolsonaro’s conservative family values and remain skeptical of Lula. William Douglas, an Evangelical federal appeals court judge, believes that Michelle will resonate with some Evangelical women and former supporters of the former president.

Michelle is not the only Bolsonaro with presidential ambitions. Bolsonaro’s two sons from a previous marriage are federal lawmakers and may also aspire to the top job. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, 42, played a significant role behind the scenes during his father’s presidency, appointing allies throughout the federal bureaucracy. However, he faces corruption allegations from his time as a Rio state lawmaker. Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, 38, has represented the Bolsonaro family on the international stage, attending U.S. gun shows and conservative political conferences. However, he holds polarizing political views and has limited support.

In conclusion, while Jair Bolsonaro’s political career has been frozen until 2030, the Bolsonaro family remains a force in Brazilian politics. Michelle Bolsonaro, with her appeal to working-class women and emphasis on traditional values, could be a potential candidate in the future. Additionally, Bolsonaro’s sons, Flavio and Eduardo, may also have their sights set on the presidency. The Bolsonaro clan continues to be a significant presence in Brazilian politics.
