British Open day two underway with amateur Lamprecht sharing lead

Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard started the second day of the British Open in Hoylake, England, under murky conditions after rain overnight. Light showers were expected in the afternoon when two of the three leaders would tee off. Matthew Jordan had a large crowd of home fans watching his opening shot on Thursday, but it was much quieter for Hojgaard’s first drive. Unfortunately, Hojgaard’s shot veered far to the left, forcing him to take his second shot from the 18th fairway. After shooting a seven-over 78 in the first round, he has a lot of work to do to make the cut for the weekend.

On Thursday, England’s Tommy Fleetwood, South African amateur Christo Lamprecht, and Argentine Emiliano Grillo all shot 66 to top the leaderboard. Grillo will be the first of the leaders to tee off in the morning, while the other two will start in the afternoon. England’s Alex Fitzpatrick, who finished three-over par in the first round, and Matthew Southgate, who finished level par, are also among the day’s opening trio. Fitzpatrick managed to land his first shot on the fairway, but Southgate’s drive ended up in a bunker. Hojgaard eventually made par, as did Fitzpatrick, but Southgate missed a 15-foot par putt.

Rory McIlroy, the favorite and 2014 champion, finished the first round level par and will tee off at 9:58 a.m. along with Jon Rahm and Justin Rose. Defending champion Cameron Smith, who finished one over par, will begin his second round just before 3 p.m. The day promises to be an exciting one as the players battle it out for the coveted British Open title.
