Browns hang on to hand 49ers first loss of season

The Cleveland Browns defeated the San Francisco 49ers with a 19-17 victory, ending the 49ers’ chance at a perfect season. Dustin Hopkins kicked a go-ahead, 29-yard field goal with 1:40 left in the game. However, Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field-goal attempt wide right with six seconds remaining, which could have allowed the 49ers to escape with a win. Jordan Mason scored an 8-yard touchdown, putting the 49ers ahead 17-13. Hopkins made a 50-yard field goal to bring the Browns within one, and the Browns’ defense forced a three-and-out to set up the game-winning drive.

Due to injuries, the 49ers were without star running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Without these weapons, Brock Purdy struggled, completing only 12 of 27 passes for 125 yards with a touchdown and an interception. This loss marked Purdy’s first regular-season loss as a starter, bringing his record to 10-1. Brandon Aiyuk had four catches for 76 yards, but the 49ers were held to just 215 yards of total offense.

Cleveland quarterback P.J. Walker, starting in place of Deshaun Watson, had 192 yards and two interceptions on 18-for-34 passing. Amari Cooper had four receptions for 108 yards, and Jerome Ford totaled 84 yards on 17 carries. Moody made a 25-yard field goal to give the 49ers a 10-0 lead in the first half, but Kareem Hunt’s 16-yard rushing touchdown brought the Browns within three points by halftime. Hopkins then scored two third-quarter field goals, putting the Browns in front 13-10.

The game started with the 49ers moving 84 yards in just five plays, resulting in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Purdy to McCaffrey. However, the Browns’ strong performance led to their victory.
