The entire tactical team of the US police department has resigned on Friday after the two officers accused of brutality were placed under unpaid leave. On Thursday, a video went viral, the police officers in Buffalo, New York, were seen shoving a 75-year-old man to the ground.

The man was taken to the hospital with head injuries. All the police officers in the riot squad have now resigned in protest to the suspension of their colleagues. Local media reported that the officers had stepped down from the emergency response team, not from the police department itself.

President of the local police union in Buffalo said that they were simply following the orders of their seniors. He added that Joseph Gramaglia, the deputy police commissioner ordered them to clear the square.

On Friday, the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, said both the police officers should be fired right away and called for the incident to be investigated for possible criminal charges. Meanwhile, Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo, said in a statement, “We can confirm that contingency plans are in place to maintain police services and ensure public safety within our community.”

Brown added the local police are continuing to work with other law enforcement agencies. The police were following the orders to impose the curfew as the result of the unrest and violent protests that erupted across the country over the death of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly 9 minutes.

In the video that went viral on social media, the old man is seen approaching a squad of riot police as they advance. Two police officers appear to push the elderly man, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the ground with minor injuries.

However, in the initial statement, the Buffalo police department said that the elderly man tripped and fallen during the skirmish involving the violent demonstrators. Later, Jeff Rinaldo, the police spokesperson attributed the statement to the officers not directly involved in the incident.

Local authorities said that the injured 75 years old man, Martin Gugino, was taken to the hospital and was in a stable condition, but on Friday, he was in serious condition. According to advocacy group Push (People United for Sustainable Housing), Gugino was a longtime social justice activist in Buffalo. It said in a statement that he has been fighting for human rights and justice for years as a peaceful protester.
