Bulgaria sends team to inspect drone that landed in Black Sea resort

Bulgaria’s defence ministry has dispatched a special unit to Tyulenovo, a town on the Black Sea, to inspect and deactivate a drone that landed there on Sunday evening. The team, sent at the request of the regional government, will determine the appropriate method of disposal for the drone. Tyulenovo, a tourist resort located 70 kilometers south of the Romanian border, is across the Black Sea from Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014 and is frequently targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks.

According to Marian Zhechev, the mayor of Shabla municipality, which includes Tyulenovo, the area was cordoned off by the police and access was restricted after a signal was received at 112. The drone was discovered on rocks near moored boats and was described as an “aircraft with standard ammunition.” It remains unclear whether the drone fell from the air or was washed ashore by sea currents.

Witnesses quoted by Nova.bg reported that the drone measured between 3 and 3.5 meters in length and had an attached container with explosives. Following the inspection, the Bulgarian team, a member of NATO, will make a decision on how to handle the drone. The Thomson RushHourDaily Trust Principles guide our reporting.
