Carrier ablaze off Dutch coast carrying almost 500 electric cars

The car carrier burning off the Dutch coast since Tuesday night is carrying nearly 500 electric vehicles, according to ship charter company “K” Line. This is significantly more than the 25 initially reported by the coastguard.

The fire on the Panamanian-registered Fremantle Highway, which was carrying new cars, resulted in the death of an Indian crew member and injury of seven others who jumped overboard to escape the flames.

According to a Tokyo-based spokesperson for K Line, there were 3,783 vehicles on board, including 498 battery electric vehicles. The spokesperson declined to provide details about the car brands or whether any Japanese manufacturers were involved.

While the cause of the fire is still unknown, an emergency responder heard in a recording released by Dutch broadcaster RTL stated that “the fire started in the battery of an electric car,” according to the coastguard’s website.

EV lithium-ion batteries burn with twice the energy of a normal fire, and maritime officials and insurers have expressed concerns about the industry’s lack of preparedness for such risks.

The Panama Maritime Authority has launched an investigation, with assistance from the Netherlands, according to the Dutch Safety Board.

The burning Fremantle, which is 199 meters long, is currently drifting about 17 km from the northernmost Dutch coast. It was en route from Germany to Egypt.

The islands where the incident occurred are part of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stretches along Germany and Denmark.
