CDC Declares Flu Epidemic After the Virus Claims the Lives of 15 Children

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a flu epidemic after the spreading virus killed fifteen children.

Last week thirteen states declared a high amount of influenza like illness amongst its citizens, this number would jump from thirteen to twenty two states in just a week’s time, showing that the flu germ is spreading throughout the country. With it being most prominent in the west and mid-western states.

There are seventeen known hemagglutinin particles, which make up the virus. This particular type has been classified as H3N2, which is responsible for an estimated ninety percent of infections this year.

The flu season usually starts around this time of year, but the numbers do not increase usually until February showing that the virus may only persist and get worse. With the ongoing spread of the virus, and the confirmation of the deaths of fifteen children so far due to the virus, the CDC, determined that an epidemic has started this season. Dr. Richard Besser, health and medical editor in chief for ABC News states on “Good Morning America” how “Every year about a hundred children die from the flu,” and how the flew has always been deadly for children and elderly people, this is due to their lowered immune system and accessibility to contract viruses.

While our children and elders may be the most susceptible to the virus, it is hiring everyone because the vaccine that has made available to the public does not appear to be working on the H3N2 strand that is prominent this year. Besser still expresses the importance of getting the flu shot however, because it could only help you fight the virus especially if you live in the areas were it has been moving rapidly.
