In 2014, a lot of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and Kaley Cuoco had their iClouds hacked and nude photos of them were posted all over the Internet. Now, from the FBI’s investigations shown, it seems that there are many more accounts that were hacked. Actually, almost 600 accounts were hacked, but not all were posted.
As early as October, the FBI were led to a South Side Chicago home where the FBI were able to trace through phone records and IP data. The hacked accounts were linked to two email addresses that had been accessed from the computer in the Chicago home. The email addresses belong to a man named Emilio Herrera.
However, this does not mean that Herrera is the suspect because,
“IP and email addresses can be masked or spoofed through a variety of technologies, and Internet data can be routed through third-party computers without their owners’ knowledge using any of a number of software packages.” So, Herrera could just be a fall guy in this situation.
The investigators were able to obtain a search warrant and search through Herrera’s home and computer. The FBI discovered that there were 2,500 iCloud accounts being targeted and that the email addresses had access to 572 accounts.
There have been no arrests as of yet and the investigation remains ongoing.
