Sex Trafficking is defined as a form of modern slavery that uses violence, threats, and other forms of coercion to get something out of these victims. For the case of Cyntoia Brown, the system has seemed to fail her. According to Brown’s public defense attorney, in 2004, a then 16-year-old Brown was arrested and charged as an adult for the murder of a 43-year-old man who picked her up on the side of the road in Nashville, Tennessee. Brown was living with an abusive adult male pimp at the time. Brown shot and killed the man after she was convinced he intended to cause her bodily harm through sex trafficking. She was convicted and sentenced to 60 years in prison and will serve 51 years before she can be considered for patrol.
Lot’s of celebrities after learning this tragic news have reached out of social media about this injustice.
Rihanna has written a paragraph on her Instagram regarding Brown. “Did we somehow change the definition of JUSTICE along the way?? Cause….. Something is horribly wrong when the system enables these rapists and the victim is thrown away for life! To each of you responsible for this child’s sentence I hope to God you don’t have children, because this could be your daughter being punished for punishing already! #FREECYNTOIABROWN#HowManyMore.”
Rihanna has also posted a photo on Instagram of Cyntoia receiving her degree from Lipscomb University’s LIFE Program (Lipscomb Initiative For Education).
Kim Kardashian has also tweeted her piece on the matter on November 21st. “The system has failed. It’s heart breaking to see a young girl sex trafficked then when she has the courage to fight back is jailed for life! We have to do better & do what’s right. I’ve called my attorneys yesterday to see what can be done to fix this. #FreeCyntoiaBrown.”
Brown’s public defender has given a quote to US Weekly about the case. She tells that Brown is a giving individual who is also very smart and scholarly. “She has taken advantage of every educational opportunity that has been available to her in prison. Cyntoia is generous. She likes to donate money to second harvest food bank.”
Snoop Dogg has also posted a photo on Instagram comparing Cyntoia’s sentence to Brock Turner’s sentence of 6 months. Turner was convicted for sexual assault in 2016 and only served 3 months of his sentence.
Currently, there is a petition on MoveOn.org to free Cyntoia. The petition at the moment has over 285,000 signatures.
Cyntoia’s story is truly a story of injustice. Brown was defending herself in a time of danger and was tried as an adult and sentencing to 60 years when people who commit worse crimes get off easier. Hopefully Brown is freed and given the justice she deserves.
