Chalmers, McIntosh power to gold at world championships

Australia’s Kyle Chalmers won gold in the men’s 100 meters freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. He set a blistering pace towards the end of the race, finishing in 47.15 seconds. Jack Alexy of the United States took silver, and Maxime Grousset of France won bronze. Chalmers, who has already won Olympic, Commonwealth, and short course world titles in the event, expressed his joy at completing the set of medals in his career.

Romania’s David Popovici, the world record holder in the event, finished sixth, while Matthew Richards of Britain could only manage fifth. Frenchman Leon Marchand continued his impressive performance at the championships, winning his third individual title in the 200 meters medley. Marchand dropped his pace slightly but still finished with the third-fastest time in history, just shy of breaking the world record set by Ryan Lochte in 2011.

In the women’s events, Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh won gold in the 200 meters butterfly, setting a new world junior record. McIntosh expressed her happiness with the race and her love for the event. Australia’s Kaylee McKeown claimed the women’s 50 meters backstroke title, adding to her gold medal in the 100 meters backstroke earlier in the week. The Australian women’s team also broke their own world record in the 4×200 meters freestyle relay.

Australia is currently leading the medal tally with nine gold medals. The World Aquatics Championships have showcased incredible performances from swimmers around the world, setting the stage for future competitions and the upcoming Paris Games.
