China aims to sap Taiwan morale with ‘escape plan’ misinformation – sources

China has launched a misinformation campaign aimed at undermining Taiwan’s morale and pressuring the island to accept its sovereignty, according to Taiwan officials. The campaign includes spreading news reports that Taiwan’s president has an “escape plan” in the event of a Chinese invasion. Taiwan is on high alert for China’s attempts to influence public opinion, including illicitly funding Beijing-friendly candidates in the upcoming presidential election. Taiwan will soon hold its annual military exercises, which will involve the temporary shutdown of its main international airport as a simulation of repelling enemies. China has been spreading misinformation about Taiwan’s military activities and its alliance with the United States through state media. The Chinese campaign is overseen by Beijing’s Central Leading Group for Taiwan Affairs and carried out by various government units. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Office stated that China aims to damage the prestige of Taiwan’s government and weaken international support. The Taiwan officials dismissed reports claiming that China is capable of destroying a U.S. carrier group with ballistic missiles, calling it Chinese propaganda. They emphasized that China wants to instill fear and discourage Taiwan from making preparations for defense.
