China urges 'extreme caution' against NATO expansion in Asia

China cautioned on Thursday that “high vigilance” was essential in the face of NATO’s “eastward expansion” after reports that the alliance was contemplating creating an office in Japan to promote dialogue with members in the region.

In light of geopolitical concerns from China and Russia, the Nikkei Asia reported on Wednesday that Japanese and NATO officials were discussing plans to establish NATO’s first liaison office in Asia in Japan in order to expedite discussions with security allies such as South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, Asian nations have “promising land for cooperation and development and should not be a battleground for geopolitics.”

“NATO’s continuous eastward expansion in the Asia-Pacific, interference in regional affairs, attempts to destroy regional peace and stability, and push for bloc confrontation necessitate high vigilance from regional countries,” Mao stated during a regular press conference.

According to Nikkei Asia, the office is expected to open in Tokyo in 2019.

When contacted about the Nikkei Asia report, NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu previously said that the organization would not share the contents of NATO nations’ conversations.

She said that allies are always evaluating NATO’s liaison agreements to ensure that they satisfy the needs of both NATO and its partners. “NATO has liaison offices and arrangements with a number of international organizations and partner countries,” she noted.

NATO’s connection with Japan, according to Lungescu, is robust and strengthening.
