CIA’s Burns: armed mutiny shows damage Putin has done to Russia

CIA Director William Burns stated that the mutiny led by Yevgeny Prigozhin was a challenge to the Russian state and demonstrated the negative impact of President Putin’s war in Ukraine. Putin, on the other hand, praised the army and security forces for preventing a civil war and compared the mutiny to the revolutions in 1917. Prigozhin had been openly insulting top Russian military officials for months, but Putin did not publicly respond. Burns highlighted Prigozhin’s criticism of the Kremlin’s rationale for the invasion of Ukraine and the conduct of the war by the Russian military. He emphasized that the mutiny was an internal Russian affair in which the United States had no involvement. Despite the failed mutiny, Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov assured that the country would emerge stronger. However, Burns noted that disaffection with the war in Ukraine presented an opportunity for the CIA to recruit spies. He stated that the CIA would not let this opportunity go to waste.
