New York State has more confirmed coronavirus cases than any other country in the world. It recorded a sudden jump in confirmed cases on Thursday with 10,000, making it a total of 159,937 cases. The latest figure places the state ahead of Spain, which has 153,000 COVID-19 cases.

According to the data compiled by John Hopkins University, the United States has more than 462,000 cases, with nearly 16,500 deaths. Globally, a total of 1.6 million cases have been recorded and 95,000 coronavirus deaths.

Meanwhile, China, where the coronavirus first emerged, has so far reported 82,000 cases and is currently easing lockdown restrictions. However, New York lags in the number of deaths (7,000), which are lower than that of Italy (18,000) and Spain (15,500). But it has more death in China (3,300).

On Wednesday, the daily death toll in New York was 799, a record high for the third consecutive day.  But the Governor of New York said that the number of coronavirus patients admitted in hospitals dropped for a second day, to nearly 200.

Governor Andre Cuomo added that the social distancing restrictions might be working and called the pandemic an explosion while compared it with the horrors of the September 11 attacks. He said, “silent explosion that ripples through society with the same randomness, the same evil that we saw on 9/11″.

On Thursday, another glimmer of hope heralded as the country-wide death toll projections were significantly lowered.

While talking to a news channel, Anthony Fauci, who is an important member of President’s COVID-19 Task Force, said their projection for the final number of virus deaths now stands at 60,000. The current figure is lower than what he estimated “between 100,000 and 200,000” last month.

New York: Mass Graves

The New York City is now using the Hart Island to burry the coronavirus dead, who have no next of kin. The city officials hired contract labor to help bury the dead as the city death rate surged high in the last three days.

The city alone has the death toll of 5,000, and the graveyards are overwhelmed Before the burial authorities are wrapping the bodies in body bags and using pine caskets.

Randall’s Island on the East River, which to the south of Hart, is also being used as parking depots for frozen, refrigerated trucks were deployed outside the hospitals.

Stay-at-home Orders and Unemployment

A total of 42 states in the United States have ordered the residents to stay at home, leading to the closure of non-essential businesses. According to the new data provided by the officials said that the unemployment claims topped 6 million on Thursday.

In an unlikely move, Chicago banned liquor sales in a bid to curb the persistent violation of restrictions. The authorities said Chicago accounts for 70% of Illinois city’s COVID-19 deaths and nearly half of its confirmed cases. The restrictions are due to remain in place until April 30.

The city also recorded a rise in gun violence; on Thursday, it left seven people dead and nearly 14 injured. City officials said that it is an unforgivable crime, and strict action will be taken against the culprits.
