Deadly Facebook Poke

Back in the day, a “poke” was someone taking their finger and jabbing it into someone, though these days as Facebook users know, a poke is a bit more complex. To poke someone, is to send a message that will show up in notifications as, “so-and so has poked you,” thus enabling the poky to become the poker, and send one back. Depending on the parties, this can go on for years. It’s a way of people staying in contact without actually speaking to one another and in some cases can be seen as flirtatious behavior.

Scott Humphrey, 27 and friend, Richard Rovetto, 29, were sharing a cab home after a friend’s bachelor party. Humphrey accused Rovetto of “poking” his girlfriend via Facebook and an argument sprouted between the two. Humphrey accused friend Rovetto of flirting with his girlfriend, though Revetto admitted that he was not aware that the two were an item.

When Rovetto left the cab, his nose was bloodied from a strike. Humphrey hit him once again, though this time, Rovetto fell backwards against the pavement with fatal injuries. He died hours later at the hospital on July 27.

Humphrey had fled the scene though when he became aware of the fatality he turned himself over to police. He was devastated by the incident and by his actions, reports say.

Though the murder was not intentional, the Nottingham Crown Court found Scott Humphrey guilty and he will spend 4 years and 4 months in jail for manslaughter.
