Dennis Hastert Indicted for Lying to FBI

Former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, has been indicted Thursday. The indictment comes from Hastert trying to conceal money he was withdrawing to keep a “prior misconduct” secret. He would take cash so he would not have to report requirements and then lied about it to the FBI; this has stunned a lot of the other politicians.

Hastert became Speaker of the House in 1999 after Newt Gingrich resigned.  Hastert had a pretty clean reputation when he was chosen to be Speaker and that is how he got the job making this scandal surprising to most. In the indictment, the first page mentions how Hastert was a high school teacher and wrestling coach in Yorkville, Illinois from 1965 to 1981.

The money that Hastert was taking was being given to someone from Yorkville. Since the indictment mentioned Hastert’s past in Yorkville and that the person is from Yorkville, it can be assumed it was someone he used to teach or coach. News sources are alleging that the “prior misconduct” may have been abuse of some sort, but nothing is certain.

However, the school that Hastert worked for released a statement saying, “Yorkville Community Unit School District #115 has no knowledge of Mr. Hastert’s alleged misconduct, nor has any individual contacted the District to report any such misconduct.” This means that no one who is investigating the indictment has contacted the school and no abuse has ever been reported.

Hastert’s bail has been set for $4,500 and his arraignment is expected to take place next week.
